Gustavo Montoya delighted in experimenting with techniques and themes, as well as colors and shapes that obeyed the artist's inspiration. He never got in the habit of dating his works, which makes his subjects defining his eras. One of them corresponds to the series "Mexican Children" which is linked to national identity, children with brown skin and indigenous features that balance the stage of cultural construction. Both paintings and sculptures from this series were presented repeatedly at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, in the "Mexican Portrait" exhibition in 1961 and in the "Masters of Mexican Painting" exhibition in 1976.
