Virgin and Child or Madonna are the conventional names used to designate the most frequent artistic theme in Marian iconography and one of the most frequently used in all Christian art: the representation of the Virgin Mary together with the Child Jesus, her son.
After some initial resistance and controversy, the formula "Mother of God" (Theotokos) was officially adopted by the Christian Church at the Council of Ephesus in 431. The earliest surviving representation of the Virgin and Child may be the mural painting in the Catacomb of Priscilla, Rome, in which the Virgin appears seated, nursing the Child, who in turn turns his head to look at the viewer.
