José María Vértiz y Delgado (Mexico City, July 10, 1812 - Mexico City, March 25, 1876) was a Mexican ophthalmologist.

 

He was the son of Francisco Xavier de Vértiz and grandson of Pedro de Vértiz, the Crown's transporter. He studied grammar and philosophy in Santiago de Querétaro. In 1831, he began studying medicine, earned his medical degree from the School of Surgery in 1835, and became a professor of surgery at the Establishment of Medical Sciences in 1836. He traveled to France where he specialized in ophthalmology.

He taught surgical medicine. He was interim director of the School of Medicine in 1868. He practiced at the Hospital of San Andrés, the Hospital for the Poor, and the Hospital of Jesús, of which he was director. He performed more than 100 cataract surgeries. He was a founding member of the National Academy of Medicine of Mexico. He pioneered the treatment of liver abscesses using the canalization method.
