Marks: Molded MFD. BY THE SUN RUBBER COMPANY, BARBERTON, O., U.S.A., PAT. NO. 2035081,
Size: 9 x 4 cm
During a rubber boom in the Akron area in the 1920s, Sun Rubber Company, located in Barberton, Ohio, was founded in 1923. It began producing toys in 1924. Sun Rubber initially produced squeak dolls and toys, many resulting from character licensing.
Sun Rubber received a 1934 patent for a DeSoto Airflow, its first toy car. Toys vehicles were colored by dipping, hand painting, and spraying. The colors used were very durable. Unlike Auburn Rubber whose toys featured realistic styling, Sun Rubber toys featured modernistic/futuristic design.
During World War II, Sun Rubber made gas masks, including one in the shape of Mickey Mouse. In 1947, Sun Rubber introduced a line of military airplanes and vehicles. The line was discontinued in 1949. Following the start of the Korean War in 1950, Sun Rubber reintroduced its line of military toys. Production ended in 1954.
