The Gymnastics and Sports Festival of the DDR took place a total of eight times in Leipzig from 1954 to 1987. Until 1963, it was still called the German Gymnastics and Sports Festival and was in the line of tradition of the fifteen German Gymnastics Festivals held until 1933 and the two German Workers' Gymnastics and Sports Festivals.

The first German Gymnastics and Sports Festival still took place on the festival grounds next to the planned Central Stadium, in the Stadium of Peace, and in the Bruno-Plache-Stadion. With the second DTSF, the event moved to the new Central Stadium, which was opened in 1956. Here, as in all subsequent festivals, the main events took place: a grand sports show staged as a sporting propaganda event, often an international football match, an international athletics event, as well as a magnificent closing ceremony. In connection with the Gymnastics and Sports Festival, the exhibition 'Art and Sport' was held each time, featuring prominent GDR artists and awarding medals for artistic competitions.
