Grey Iron Casting Company - History

Following an 1881 fire that destroyed the machine shop, it was reorganized as the Grey Iron Company. Henry S. Stauffer and his brother-in-law S. N. Earby headed the company. It produced patented post support and Sholl’s reversible blind and shutter drop hinges. When Earby withdrew after a short period of time, the name was changed to the Grey Iron Casting Company.

When H. S. Stauffer sold Grey Iron Casting in February 1891, he remained as manager until 1894. T. B. Himes became the new president and John Eshleman the secretary and treasurer. In July 1901, 16 companies, one of which was Grey Iron Casting Company, formed the National Novelty Corporation. It was designed to compete with German imports. The National Novelty Company declared bankruptcy in December 1906. It was succeeded by the Hardware & Woodenware Manufacturing Company.
