The manufacture of pottery in Jalisco dates back to pre-Hispanic times. The earliest ceramics in the area were rough and utilitarian. Some of these were multicolored, but the decoration faded because the pieces were not fired after painting.

The Spanish introduced European techniques to the area, including glazing to maintain color and give a shiny finish. In the 1950s and 1960s, Jorge Wilmot and Ken Edwards introduced more modern high-fire ceramics to the Guadalajara area, beginning in Tonalá. Wilmot mainly kept local traditional designs, although some Eastern influence is also mixed in, along with Asian glazing processes. Edwards introduced new designs with the techniques.
